And I’m BACK!

Hello! Have you missed me? I’ve certainly missed me, and by that, I mean writing. I took a break from my blog because I felt that I was just churning out simple, brutally easy make-up reviews that were bland and boring. Writing for thepoppyraptor was starting to become a chore, and I really felt like I’d lost my identity. We should probably get one thing straight in this first post – I AM NOT A BEAUTY BLOGGER.

Whenever people outside of the blogiverse asked me what I blog about, I always feel insanely embarrassed telling them I mainly write ‘beauty’ posts. And that’s not because I think there’s anything wrong with that – not at all – it’s just that I am so not a ‘beauty’ blogger. My skills with make-up are passable at best, and I only own 2 eyeshadow specific make-up brushes (if that fact doesn’t give me away, nothing will).

I have absolutely nothing but respect and awe for people who do want to be beauty bloggers, who have such incredible aesthetic, artistic vision but they’ve also made me realise that my talents don’t lie in the same pool, and neither do my interests when it actually comes down to it. I like history and books and science. The last thing that got me super excited was finding out that every physics-related storyline in The Simpsons is based on real, university-level quantum physics – that episode where Homer gets stuck in a parallel universe? Completely scientifically factually correct, as far as we’re currently aware. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes, I really like a good piece of makeup too. I’ve recently found THE best dupe for Benefit’s POREfessional primer (Soap and Glory, half the price. You’re welcome.) What I really like reading is those lists on Buzzfeed of ’12 Thoughts You Have When You Read 50 Shades For The First Time’ – so maybe expect some of those too (because I genuinely have never read or watched anything to do with 50 Shades). My favourite YouTuber is Emma Blackery and I have absolutely no idea who Jaclyn Glen is, even though I own her Morphe palette.

I debated completely re-naming my blog and starting over, but I’m still me (and I still like dinosaurs) and this re-brand is about making thepoppyraptor reflect *me* more truthfully. I also had plans of going self-hosted and buying a pipdig theme and looking more professional, but then I bought a dog instead so I don’t have the money for that any more.

So, what can you expect from thepoppyraptor, now that she’s back up and running? For starters, a regular upload schedule. I’ll be posting twice a week, on a Monday and Friday, with occasional guest posts or collaborations on Wednesdays. There will be less beauty posts, but they won’t totally disappear, perhaps just dwindle down to a couple a month. There will be monthly series, which could be themed on anything from Tudor history to science fiction short stories to ABH dupes. Or the face that the plural of ‘series’ is also ‘series’, whereas the plural of ‘octopus’ is ‘octopuses’ (yeah, I’ll be tackling Those Burning Questions™). I’ll also be posting a lot more about my mental health, including things like excerpts from my ‘BPD Diary’ – where I keep track of particularly good or bad MH days.

Basically, if you choose to stick around, you’re going to get to know the real me, with no shiny veneer on top. I’m not somebody who has a shiny veneer in any sense of the word – and I’d like to stop pretending that I do. And it would really mean a lot if you stuck around and got to know the real me too.

I look forward to seeing you on Friday, when my first post introducing my new dog, Morrigan, goes live.

I hope you’re all doing well – look after yourselves and I’ll see you real soon. P.
